THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE RECEIPTS

Methodology

The Weekly Playbook separates calculated league facts from editorial interpretation. This page explains what each major metric means, what data it uses, and where its limits are.

Data sources

Each edition uses available Sleeper league settings, users, rosters, matchups, player records, transactions, and Sleeper projections. Current editorial research is limited to selected football sources, including NFL.com, ESPN, FantasyPros, and Sleeper. If required league data is incomplete, the edition identifies unavailable analysis instead of inventing a result.

ALL-PLAY RECORD

How a team scored against the whole league.

For each completed week, a team’s actual score is compared with every other team’s actual score. That produces wins, losses, and ties independent of the scheduled opponent. It describes weekly scoring strength; it does not replace the league’s official head-to-head standings.

HISTORICAL OPTIMAL LINEUP

The best legal result from that week’s recorded players.

The optimizer fills the league’s supported Sleeper lineup slots, uses each recorded player at most once, and maximizes that week’s recorded points. Efficiency is actual points divided by optimal points. Bench gap is the non-negative difference between the two.

This is hindsight analysis, not a claim that the lineup choice was obvious before kickoff. Bench gap is shown only when recorded starters reconcile to the official score.

SCHEDULE LUCK

What the same scores would do against random opponents.

Each completed week compares a team’s recorded score with every possible opponent. The model treats the opponent as uniformly random among the other teams and independent from week to week. Ties count as half a win.

Luck is actual win credits minus expected win credits. It is conditional on recorded scoring, not a forecast or a claim that the schedule caused the result.

POWER RANKING

A transparent, league-relative formula.

  • 45%Cumulative all-play win share
  • 30%Cumulative scoring percentile
  • 15%Next-week availability-filtered offensive projection percentile
  • 10%Current roster availability share

Players marked Out, IR, PUP, NA, or Suspended are excluded from availability. Questionable players remain available. Exact ties resolve by Sleeper roster ID. The result is relative to this league, not a third-party ranking or win forecast.

Editorial analysis

The numerical tables and metrics above are calculated in code. AI-assisted writing turns constrained league evidence and current football research into matchup stories and team scouting. Editorial language can still be imperfect, and source data can change after official stat corrections. Use the report-error control in an edition when a factual statement needs review.

What the report is—and is not
